CAN GALLBLADDER STONES BE DANGEROUS ?

Yes, gallbladder stones can be dangerous if they become trapped in a bile duct or move into another part of the digestive system. Gallstones are small stones usually made of cholesterol and form in the gallbladder. Most people with gallstones experience minor symptoms, some see acute pain and some cases are diagnosed on routine health checkups. Generally, it is advised to opt for surgery whenever you are diagnosed with gallstones. Sometimes, we are waiting for the right time for surgery and unfortunately,  gallstone becomes trapped in the cystic duct or bile CBD, it can cause serious complications, including:
  • Biliary colic
A sudden, intense abdominal pain that usually lasts 1–5 hours. This can happen when a gallstone moves from the gallbladder into the cystic duct or CBD.
  • Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea,  vomiting, and fainting attacks.
  • Jaundice
A yellowing of the skin and eyes, and possibly orange or brown urine, is caused by trapped bile in the bloodstream. This also happens when a bile duct is blocked by a stone
  • Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas can cause intense, constant abdominal pain and usually requires immediate attention, medical management of symptoms, ERCP, and surgical removal of the gallbladder.
  • Cholangitis
Inflammation of the bile ducts can cause pain, fever, jaundice, and shaking. This is also a very painful situation and we need to get admitted to the hospital and require intensive care
  • Infection of the liver
A severe or life-threatening infection that can occur when gallstones obstruct bile ducts. This is known as hepatitis. This also requires admission and special care
  • Gallbladder cancer
People with a history of gallstones have an increased risk of gallbladder cancer. So, if you have gallstones, please be in touch with your surgeon and keep evaluating till cholecystectomy is done.
